Recipe of the Month: Candy Cane Dog Treats

December 2, 2016 , , Carina Thornton

Don’t you love candy canes? I remember that my grandparents used to put them on the tree as decoration and by Christmas Eve, you’d be lucky to find a couple still hidden within the branches. We frequently had to untangle them from the enormous amounts of tinsel attached to them but it was so worth it!

This recipe might be just a little crunchier and not as sweet and sticky but my guess is that your dog will enjoy it just as much.

Candy Cane Dog Treats

3 cups whole wheat flour

½ cup powdered milk

1 cup chicken, beef or vegetable broth

2 large eggs (set one aside for egg wash)

1 tsp. Peppermint oil

red food coloring (optional)

Preheat oven to 350° and mix all the wet ingredients together. Add in the dry ingredients and knead the dough on a floured board for a couple of minutes.

Divide the dough in half and knead dough on floured surface for 2-3 minutes.

In one half put the peppermint oil and knead in. In the other half, add food coloring and knead in.

Refrigerate dough in separate bowls for an hour.

Cover a cookie sheet in foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Whisk remaining egg for wash in a small bowl.

Remove dough from refrigerator, break each dough color up into an equal number of pieces (about a Tbsp. or so in size.) Roll each ball into a small snake-like shape. Twist one of each color together and bend the end to create a hook shape. Place your “Candy Cane” on the foil lined baking sheet. Brush each with egg wash. Bake for 10-12 minutes and let cool before serving.
