Did everyone indulge ever-so-slightly in the yumminess that comes along with the holidays? If you’re like me, you’re starting to feel the effects of a little too much sugar (and cheese… and eggnog… and champagne…) and are hoping to clean things up a little now that the decorations are packed up and the last of the pine needles have left the building. Of course that doesn’t mean that treats are completely out of the question so here is a recipe that will allow your pooch some fun while he joins you in your new healthy lifestyle!
2017 Resolution Dog Treats
- 1 medium banana
- 1 cup shredded carrots
- 1/4 cup applesauce, unsweetened
- 1/8 cup water
- 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
Preheat oven to 350° F. Mash the ripe banana in a small bowl. Grate the carrots, mix with the banana and then pour in the applesauce and water.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and oats. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, pour in the carrot mixture and stir until thoroughly combined.
Knead the dough in the bowl with your hands then fold out onto a floured surface and continue to knead until a dough has formed.
Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut out into 3 inch pieces with a fun cookie cutter. (You should get about 24 cookies.)
Lightly spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray.
Place the cut-outs on the baking sheet and bake for 25 minutes.
Let them cool completely on a wire rack.
Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or in the freezer for up to 6 months.
